Souvenirs: New New York Icons

New New York Icons, for Storefront for Art and Architecture — 2017

In September 2017, Storefront for Art and Architecture invited Midnight Commercial to create a souvenir that captured the essence of a particular geographic area of New York City: Brooklyn Community Board 2. As the ultimate commodity, or record, of an experience, souvenirs are often cheap, a-critical clichés of a landmark, or sense of place. For the exhibition, Souvenirs: New New York Icons, we were asked transcend the traditional, and produce a souvenir that addresses the nascent values of urban life in this community.

Inspired by the various forms of transit, cuisine, and architectural elements surrounding Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Brooklyn Heights, we created a large-scale, modular 3D print reminiscent of children’s model kits. Each of the components are designed to be visually stunning, individual components, or souvenirs.
